Hypertension Day 2016 – know your numbers
17 May is dedicated to World Hypertension Day (WHD) – an initiative of the World Hypertension League (WHL). WHD was launched in May 2005 and has now become an annual event with the purpose of promoting public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this modern epidemic by going for a blood pressure check at least once a year.
We have recently completed a visual emailer and poster for leaders in infrastructure, the Aveng Group, where we used illustrations to explain what hypertension is, the causes, the effects and how to prevent it. This is part of a monthly campaign that distributes visually engaging awareness materials to office staff on a wide variety of topics including water conservation, personal hygiene, a good office environment, quality, safety at home and recycling.
Since 2013, the theme for World Hypertension Day has been ‘Know Your Numbers’ – with the goal of creating and increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world. The decision to go with this theme was based on global statistics, which indicate that only 50% of people with hypertension are actually aware that they have it, and in some populations the awareness rate was even less than 10%.
We urge everyone to please contribute to this cause and help raise awareness for the disease that many people are still unaware of and for companies to inform employees about the importance of having their blood pressure tested on a regular basis.
Get in touch if you’d like us to create illustrated or animated content for a similar initiative, or to find out others ways in which illustration and animation can be used to communicate better with your team.
